How to Have a Wedding at Kohler-Andrae State Park in Sheboygan, Wisconsin

A Friendly Guide for Couples Dreaming of a Lakeside Wooded Wedding

If you're envisioning a wedding surrounded by nature's beauty—think sandy beaches, towering dunes, cozy treelines and the soothing sounds of Lake Michigan—Kohler-Andrae State Park in Sheboygan is a hidden gem. As a wedding photographer who has had the pleasure of capturing love stories in this serene setting, I'm here to help you navigate the process of planning your special day at this stunning park.

Ceremony Locations at Kohler-Andrae State Park

Kohler-Andrae offers several picturesque spots for your ceremony:

1. The Beach

Exchange vows with the waves as your backdrop. The expansive sandy shoreline provides a romantic setting, especially during sunset.

2. The Amphitheater

Nestled among the trees, this small outdoor amphitheater offers a more structured setting with bench seating, perfect for intimate gatherings and where most of my couples have chosen to say I do!

3. Shelters

For a more private ceremony, consider reserving one of the park's picnic shelters. These areas provide a comfortable space for your guests and are surrounded by nature. This can definitely be an additional reservation option to the other two locations listed above as this works great for an intimate reception space! On the park reservations you can look up Indoor Shelter.

Permits and Reservations

To host your wedding at Kohler-Andrae, you'll need to obtain the appropriate permits:

  • Wedding Permit: If you're planning a simple ceremony for a small group, you may conduct the wedding in a public area without a special permit. However, if you require equipment, a shelter, or expect a larger gathering, a special event permit is necessary.

  • Reservation for Shelters or Amphitheater: These spaces can be reserved up to 11 months in advance. It's advisable to book early, especially for summer and fall weekends, as they tend to fill up quickly.

  • Commercial Use Permit: If you're hiring vendors (like photographers or caterers), they may need a Commercial Use Permit. This form must be submitted at least two weeks in advance.

Parking and Fees

  • Admission Sticker: A valid Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required for all vehicles entering the park. These can be purchased online or at the park entrance. Day use permits are available at the park entrance shack or self-serve kiosk as well. Call and check with the State Park office as there might be potential options for group rate permit purchases for weddings that require special event permits.

  • Parking: While parking is available, it can be limited, especially on weekends. Inform guests of this to arrive earlier than anticipated. I have seen parking get packed on summer weekends, holiday weekends. So if you are flexible on your date then a tip would be to check the local school district schedules, as families travel to the parks the most. Though not guaranteed, this can potentially help avoid crowds.

Restrooms and Facilities

  • Restrooms: Flush toilets are available during the warmer months (typically May through mid-October). Vault toilets are available year-round. All a short walk and nearby the Amphitheater and Shelter.

  • Accessibility: Some facilities and trails are wheelchair accessible. It's recommended to check with the park for specific accommodations.

Tips for a Smooth Wedding Day

  • Timing: Part of my services is helping with a timeline call! We can work together to make sure the flow of your day is smooth and relaxed!

  • Weather: Always have a backup plan in case of unexpected weather changes. The Sanderling Nature Center offers an indoor option if needed. (Check with office about those options when booking.)

Can You Get Ready at the Venue?

Technically, no dedicated “getting ready” space is provided at Kohler-Andrae like you'd find at a traditional wedding venue. Here's what that means:

Not Provided:

  • No bridal suite or dressing room on-site

  • No private indoor space to change clothes at the amphitheater or beach areas

Possible Workarounds:

  • Sanderling Nature Center: If open and reserved in advance, this building offers indoor space and restrooms — a potential (but rustic) prep spot

  • Restrooms: Public restrooms (flush toilets in season) can work for quick changes, but are not ideal for full hair/makeup or dress prep

  • Get ready off-site (which would be my advice): Many couples get ready at a nearby airbnb, or family home in Sheboygan/Oostburg, then travel to the park dressed.

Planning your wedding at Kohler-Andrae State Park can be a seamless and enjoyable experience with the right preparation. If you have any questions or need assistance with your wedding photography, feel free to reach out. Let's make your special day unforgettable!
