Where I would elope in Southern California (that’s not Sunset Cliffs)
Sunset Cliffs is one of the first places couples find when they start searching for Southern California elopement locations. And while it’s beautiful, it’s also one of the most well-known spots along the coast.
The thing I love about Southern California though is that there are so many beach towns with equally beautiful views that feel a little quieter and more relaxed. If we were dreaming up locations together, these are three places I’d happily recommend for an intimate coastal elopement.
Think of it as the same ocean magic — just a little less crowded.
San Clemente (My Favorite)
Laid-back coastal cliffs and classic California sunsets
San Clemente is one of those beach towns that instantly feels relaxed. The coastline here has beautiful bluff overlooks above the ocean, long sandy beaches, and a charming downtown that feels straight out of a California postcard.
It’s perfect for couples who want that classic Southern California coastline without feeling like they’re in the middle of a busy tourist destination.
You could say your vows overlooking the ocean at San Clemente State Beach, wander down to the sand for portraits afterward, and then celebrate with dinner somewhere near the pier as the sky turns pink and blue.
Permit note:
Small ceremonies on public beaches are often allowed for very small groups, but larger gatherings or setups may require a city or state park permit.
2. Laguna Beach
Hidden coves and romantic coastal scenery
Laguna Beach has one of the most unique coastlines in Southern California. Instead of long stretches of sand, the shoreline is filled with little coves, rocky cliffs, and tucked-away beaches.
It’s the kind of place where you can find a quiet overlook for vows, explore down to a hidden cove afterward, and end the evening with sunset portraits along the cliffs making this scenery feel incredibly romantic.
Permit note:
Ceremonies on Laguna Beach public beaches and parks typically require a city permit for weddings or elopements.
3. Dana Point
Peaceful harbor views and golden coastal light
Dana Point is one of those coastal towns that people sometimes overlook — but it’s actually such a beautiful place for an intimate ceremony.
There are coastal bluffs overlooking the harbor, scenic walking paths along the cliffs, and quiet beaches tucked along the shoreline. The sunsets here are especially beautiful when the light reflects across the boats in the harbor.
It’s a great option if you want something that feels peaceful and intimate, but still close to great restaurants and places to celebrate afterward.
Permit note:
Most beach ceremonies in Dana Point require a permit from the city or harbor district, depending on the exact location.
